Medstar Washington Hospital Center Special Police Officers, Public Safety Officers & Dispatchers

Washington DC - August 3, 2016 - Medstar Washington Hospital Center 62 Special Police Officers, Public Safety Officers and Dispatchers made their VOICES HEARD yesterday by voting by over a 2-1 margin in favor of joining the Law Enforcement Officers Security Unions (LEOSU-DC).

This is the first time in the history of Medstar Washington Hospital Center their flagship hospital or any of the Medstar hospital affiliates that their security department have successfully unionized.

Steve Maritas, LEOSU-DC Organizing Director stated the battle to unionize the Special Police Officers, Public Safety Officers and Dispatchers working at Medstar Washington Hospital Center was not an easy task, given the fact that Medstar Management had given some of the officers illegal $4 to $5 dollar raises to influence the vote, which is prohibited under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) during an ongoing union campaign. In addition Medstar Management blocked the union from sending emails on their system which was illegal under the NLRA and made it more difficult for the Union LEOSU-DC to communicate with these officers. Despite these setbacks the Union found a way to communicate our message by first putting out a press release that was sent to the media, and thereafter having NBC Washington TV News Station run a story on its morning and nightly news broadcast about the officers struggles.

We now welcome all Medstar Washington Hospital Center Special Police Officers, Public Safety Officers and Dispatchers into our family as we set the course for collective bargaining to protect their rights, wages and benefits.
