NYPD EXPANDS SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE TO CONNECT WITH THE PUBLIC
NYPD News blog increases news and information sharing with the public
The New York City Police Department announced today it has launched a social media platform titled “NYPD News.” NYPD News is the latest social media platform the NYPD is leveraging to share timely and accurate information and how the NYPD is dedicated to working collaboratively with those it serves to continue keeping New York City safe.
“NYPD News is a continuation of the Department’s history of embracing popular and emerging technology in order to keep the public informed,” Police Commissioner William J. Bratton said. “We are dedicated to working with the public and connecting with people through the outlets they use on a daily basis.”
NYPD News also shares safety advisories and NYPDCrime Stoppers information. The site is designed to allow people to easily share the information on their own social media platforms. To increase the site’s accessibility, NYPD News automatically reconfigures its design to be accessible on mobile devices. Visitors to the page can also subscribe to the site’s RSS feed for the latest updates and accurate information.
The NYPD has been using social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter as a way to connect with the public to share information and interact with them. The Department’s Facebook page has more than 289,000 page “likes” and the official NYPD Twitter account, @NYPDnews, has more than 117,000 followers.
